USPTO Shifts International Filings to Madrid e-Filing System

The United States Patent and Trademark Office announced that beginning October 1, 2026, the Madrid e-Filing system will become the sole platform for filing initial international trademark applications based on U.S. registrations or applications. The change ends support for the Trademark Electronic Application System for these outbound Madrid Protocol filings.

The transition aims to streamline processes and align with international standards used by other member offices. Users with existing TEAS accounts will need to migrate to the new platform for Madrid-related submissions after the cutoff date.

Trademark practitioners have noted that the shift requires updated training on the Madrid e-Filing interface and potential adjustments to internal workflows for clients seeking multi-jurisdictional protection.
