USPTO Launches AI Image Search for Trademarks

20 July 2026

The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office has rolled out an AI-assisted image search feature within its TM Search system. The tool enables users to upload images and compare them against the U.S. trademark register to identify similar marks.

Clarivate provided the underlying technology under a contract awarded by the USPTO. The feature aims to improve the ability of applicants, practitioners, and registrants to spot potential conflicts involving design marks.

The launch follows other recent AI enhancements at the USPTO, including tools for classification and mark description generation. Officials expect the image search capability to streamline examination and reduce conflicts in the register.

Users can access the new function directly through the public trademark search portal after logging into a USPTO.gov account. The system returns results based on visual similarity rather than relying solely on traditional design search codes.

This development represents a step toward greater use of artificial intelligence in trademark administration at the federal level.
