UKIPO Allows Supermac's Trademark Registration

The UK Intellectual Property Office has ruled in favor of Irish fast-food chain Supermac's in a long-running trademark dispute with McDonald's. The decision permits registration of the Supermac's name and logo in the UK.

McDonald's had opposed the application, arguing potential conflict with its existing UK trademarks including "Big Mac" and "McCafé". The UKIPO found significant visual, aural, and conceptual differences between the marks, concluding that the average consumer would not make a link between them.

Supermac's founder Pat McDonagh described the outcome as a significant victory for the Irish business. The ruling follows a separate EUIPO decision in June that rejected Supermac's EU trademark application.

The case stems from an application originally filed in 2016. Supermac's plans to expand its brand in Britain following the UK decision.
