TTAB Practice Notices Updated by Canadian IP Office

1 August 2026

The Canadian Intellectual Property Office announced updates to Trademarks Opposition Board practice notices. The revisions address procedural aspects of oppositions, including filing requirements, evidence submission timelines, and hearing protocols.

The notices provide guidance on electronic filing through the online services portal and clarify expectations for parties participating in opposition proceedings. Updates also cover group goods or services classification under the Nice system during opposition stages.

Practitioners note that the changes align Canadian procedures more closely with international standards while maintaining the administrative efficiency of the opposition board. The updates apply immediately to new and pending matters.

The Trademarks Opposition Board continues to publish decisions through its Decisia database, allowing public access to recent rulings. Brand owners and counsel are advised to review the revised notices before initiating or responding to oppositions.
