Taylor Swift Faces Trademark Infringement Lawsuit Over Album Title

8 June 2026

A federal lawsuit filed in the Central District of California claims that Taylor Swift's album title 'The Life of a Showgirl' infringes on a registered trademark held by entertainer Maren Flagg, professionally known as Maren Wade. The complaint alleges that marketing and use of the album title create a likelihood of consumer confusion with Flagg's long-running 'Confessions of a Showgirl' stage show, book, and related branding, which originated from a column first published in 2014.

The suit, brought against Swift, Universal Music Group, and Bravado International Group Merchandising Services Inc., seeks an injunction, damages, profits, and attorneys' fees under the Lanham Act. It asserts that Swift's team adopted the similar designation despite awareness of the existing mark.

The case remains ongoing with prior proceedings including a response from Swift's attorneys and scheduling for a preliminary injunction hearing.
