Taylor Swift Seeks Dismissal of Showgirl Trademark Suit

Taylor Swift's legal team filed a motion on May 26, 2026, in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California seeking dismissal of a trademark infringement action brought by Las Vegas performer Maren Flagg, who performs as Maren Wade. The suit alleges that Swift's album 'The Life of a Showgirl' and related merchandise infringe Flagg's rights in her cabaret show and book titled 'Confessions of a Showgirl.'

In the motion, Swift's attorneys described the complaint as 'absurd' and 'merely the plaintiff's latest attempt to generate publicity by associating herself with Ms. Swift.' They argued that the claims fail to state a viable cause of action and that the court lacks personal jurisdiction over Swift and her company, TAS Rights Management.

On May 27, Swift's longtime counsel appeared in court to oppose the plaintiff's request for a preliminary injunction that would block sales of album-related merchandise. The defense emphasized First Amendment protections for artistic expression in the album title.

The USPTO had previously suspended Swift's trademark application for the title due to potential confusion with Flagg's existing registration. The lawsuit remains pending as the court considers the dismissal motion.
