Starbucks Sues Workers United Over Trademark Use

12 July 2026

Starbucks filed suit in Iowa federal court alleging that Starbucks Workers United infringes and dilutes the company's registered trademarks. The complaint states the union uses the Starbucks name and a similar circular green logo on websites, apparel, and coffee mugs sold online.

The company argues that while unions may use an employer's name for protected activities, this does not permit dilution of a famous brand for merchandise sales or statements on unrelated social and political issues.

The union has previously countered with its own filing seeking a declaratory judgment that its use is permissible.
