Seat Blocks Italian Rival's 'S' Logo TM Bid in EU

2 September 2026

Spanish automaker Seat successfully opposed an application by an Italian rival to register an 'S' logo as a trademark in the European Union. Officials determined that the mark would unfairly benefit from the reputation of Seat's longstanding 'S' brand.

The opposition succeeded on grounds that the proposed mark would take unfair advantage of Seat's established rights. The decision prevents the Italian company from securing EU-wide protection for the logo in classes related to its intended use.

This outcome highlights the EUIPO's scrutiny of applications that may create associations with well-known automotive marks. Seat has maintained its 'S' branding for decades across vehicle models and related goods and services.

The ruling adds to recent EU trademark decisions involving single-letter or stylized marks where prior reputation plays a central role in opposition outcomes.
