Rihanna Wins Turkish Trademark Dispute Over RIANNA
A Turkish court has ordered the cancellation of a trademark registration for RIANNA after determining that the mark was sufficiently similar to the singer Rihanna's established RIHANNA trademark. The ruling came after Rihanna's company filed suit arguing that the single-letter difference would likely cause consumer confusion and association with her global brand.
The dispute progressed through lower courts, with the regional appellate court upholding the invalidation. Türkiye's Court of Cassation ultimately rejected the defendant's appeal on November 6, 2024, affirming the decision. The case highlights protections available to well-known international personalities against unauthorized registrations of closely resembling marks.
The court found that the resemblance between RIANNA and RIHANNA could lead consumers to associate the registered mark with the singer's established rights, supporting the cancellation on grounds of likelihood of confusion.
