Meloni Files EU Sound Mark for Voice Recording

10 October 2026

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni filed an application with the European Union Intellectual Property Office on October 5, 2026, to register a sound mark consisting of a roughly four-second recording in which she says “Io sono Giorgia Meloni” twice.

The application, filed in her own name through an Italian intellectual property firm, remains under examination. It covers goods and services in Classes 9, 41, and 45, including downloadable multimedia content, cultural activities, publishing, and the organization of political events.

Meloni’s office has linked the filing to concerns over AI-generated deepfakes and voice cloning that could misattribute statements to her. The chosen phrase echoes a well-known declaration from a 2019 political rally and the title of her 2021 autobiography.

EU rules permit sound marks to be filed as audio files without graphic representation. If registered, the mark would provide protection across all 27 EU member states within the specified classes, though it would not confer a general right over all imitations of her voice or prevent the technical creation of clones.

The filing has drawn attention as a potential new approach for public figures seeking additional legal tools against generative AI misuse.
