Jersey Launches Independent Trademark System August 1

2 August 2026

Effective August 1, 2026, Jersey implemented major changes to its trademark regime by terminating the long-standing practice of re-registering United Kingdom marks and establishing an independent national system.

Under the new framework, applicants must file separately with the Jersey Intellectual Property Office, operated by the Jersey Financial Services Commission. International registrations designating the UK will no longer automatically extend to Jersey; specific designations for Jersey are now required.

The new regime largely follows UK legal and procedural standards, including a formal opposition period of two months that may be extended to three months. The changes apply to both new filings and pending matters, with transitional provisions for applications in process before the effective date.

The reforms aim to align Jersey with international norms and provide direct protection mechanisms independent of UK registrations.
