Jersey Launches Independent Trademark System August 1

The Bailiwick of Jersey implemented an independent trademark regime on August 1, 2026, separating from the UK system under the Madrid Protocol. Applications are now examined and registered directly by Jersey authorities, creating a standalone national register.

Applicants seeking protection in Jersey must file locally rather than relying on UK registrations. The change aligns Jersey with other jurisdictions maintaining separate IP offices while remaining accessible via the Madrid System as an independent designation.

The new framework includes standard examination procedures for absolute and relative grounds. Renewal and opposition processes follow Jersey-specific rules. Existing UK marks do not automatically extend to Jersey under the prior arrangement.

IP practitioners note the shift simplifies local enforcement but requires separate filings for full coverage in the Channel Islands.
