Indian SC Directs Matrimony.com, Jodi365 to Explore Settlement
The Supreme Court of India directed the parties in a five-year-old trademark infringement case to explore a settlement. Matrimony.com had offered to rename its app “Jodi Matrimony” to avoid impacting existing users.
The dispute centers on Matrimony.com’s use of the “Jodii” mark for its matchmaking app, which a Madras High Court division bench found deceptively similar to FreeElective Network Pvt Ltd’s registered “Jodi365” trademark. The High Court had issued a permanent injunction restraining use of the mark and related materials.
Matrimony.com challenged the High Court order before the Supreme Court. The bench noted the parties’ willingness to settle and encouraged exploration of resolution options.
The case involves claims of consumer confusion in the online matrimonial services market in India.
