Engelstad Foundation Backs Wilson in Fighting Sioux TM Fight

The Engelstad Foundation announced support for Grand Forks resident Tyler Wilson in his trademark dispute with the University of North Dakota. Wilson applied to register 'Fighting Sioux' for apparel in May 2025. UND opposed the application at the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board in March 2026.

Foundation trustee Kris Engelstad urged the university to negotiate, noting Wilson's willingness to reach a mutually beneficial resolution since before the matter became public. The case remains suspended pending a motion to dismiss filed by Wilson's counsel.

UND acknowledged the foundation's longstanding support while stating it makes decisions on marks with the university's best interests in mind. The nickname was retired in 2012.
