Colombia Denies Coronet Trademark Registration
Colombia's Superintendency of Industry and Commerce denied registration of the mixed mark Coronet for maintenance and repair services in Nice Class 37. The decision followed an opposition filed by Corona Industrial S.A.S. against the application by Anhui Coronet Tech. Co., Ltd.
The SIC found that the marks share the root "Coron-" and present similar graphic and phonetic structures, creating a risk of confusion and association with Corona Industrial's established family of marks in the construction and paint sectors. Evidence supported recognition of Corona as a well-known mark in the relevant market.
The opposition succeeded on the class 37 services. An application for class 12 goods remains pending until the current resolution is final. The ruling highlights the evidentiary standards applied by the SIC when assessing well-known mark status and consumer confusion in opposition proceedings.
