China Revises Trademark Law Effective 2027

China's Standing Committee of the National People's Congress adopted a comprehensive revision of the Trademark Law on June 26, 2026. The new law expands to 87 articles across nine chapters and will enter into force on January 1, 2027.

Key updates include shortening the opposition period from three months to two months. The revision also addresses deceptive or misleading trademark applications and aims to curb bad-faith filings and hoarding.

The changes respond to issues with crowded registers and defensive filings. Foreign brand owners are advised to adjust monitoring practices for the shorter opposition window.

This marks the fifth revision since the law's original enactment in 1983 and the first major overhaul since 2013.
