Buc-ee's Sues Ohio Mini-Mart Over Beaver Logo

11 August 2026

Buc-ee's, the Texas-based convenience store chain, filed suit in late July in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Ohio against Hanes Road Carryout, operator of Beaver's Mini Mart. The complaint alleges that the small store's smiling cartoon beaver logo and red coloring infringe Buc-ee's federally registered trademarks used for over four decades.

Buc-ee's claims the marks are likely to cause consumer confusion regarding affiliation or sponsorship. The mini-mart, owned for more than a decade by Vik Boparai, lacks gas pumps and is located miles from interstate highways. Local officials and the owner have described the action as overreach, noting the businesses are dissimilar in scale and that beavers serve as community mascots in Beavercreek.

The filing follows public commentary from comedian John Oliver highlighting Buc-ee's pattern of enforcement actions against smaller entities using animal-themed branding. Governor Mike DeWine has commented on the dispute in recent days. The case remains pending.
