BharatPe and PhonePe Settle Trademark Dispute in Delhi High Court

13 September 2026

BharatPe and PhonePe have settled their multi-year trademark dispute over the use of the 'Pe' element in their respective marks. The companies informed Justice Sanjeev Narula that they are withdrawing their lawsuits following a settlement agreement.

The court reviewed the agreement and decreed the suit in terms of its provisions. PhonePe had claimed exclusivity over 'Pe' as an invented word in its 'PhonePe' marks for financial services, alleging infringement and passing off by BharatPe.

Earlier court rulings had found that both marks are composite and that exclusivity over the suffix alone could not be claimed. The settlement brings an end to parallel proceedings in the Delhi and Bombay High Courts.

The companies are complying with the terms of the agreement and related court orders.
